So, we tend to use "wildflowers" or "wild weeds", as most of us sticks hayseeds know them as free flora. Wildlife love them. And let's face it, what's the difference between fancy pants plants and free flower flora? Oh, I know! $6 to $10 a flowerpot maybe? If you have a big area, that's a lot of money in $6 pots to put out a bunch of plants that may or may not be able to withstand a drought. So, here's a trick. Where you know a stand of wildflowers are going to come back year after year, plant some hardy (in your growing zone) flower seeds such as zinnias or cosmos amongst them. Or, even a pot or two of carefree plants from your local nursery will work to give you some color contrast if your zinnia seeds forget to sprout. It makes it look like you planned it that way! Then, clear into them with some sorta weed wacker to make some narrow paths and a trail through them. Year to year throw some seeds from other wildflowers growing on your place, or shared from your neighbor's, amongst them. If they happen to come up next year, more power to you. If they don't, well try again the next year. Use your imagination to make the area your own creation. These low maintenance plantings work great in places that don't get irrigation and have been a constant source of irritation. HAPPY GARDENING!!!
